Demetria Estate is located above Foxen Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley, just a few hours north of Los Angeles. The Estate has been a family-owned winery since 2005, and is named after John and Sandra Zahoudanis’ daughter, Demetria. The name is fitting as it means “Goddess of Harvest” in the ancient Greek language. The image of the double rams head represents the merging of the two stylistic wine portfolios produced under the Demetria name, which include Rhone-style wines from the Estate in the Santa Ynez Valley, and Chardonnay and Pinot Noir sourced from some of the best possible vineyards in Santa Rita Hills. Demetria’s winemaking team is led by winemaker Harry Waye who brings his minimalist winemaking approach, beliefs of low alcohol and balanced acidity, into their wines.
The property consists of 213 acres of rolling hills with 38 high elevation hillside acres currently under vine, planted in phases from 1990 to 2000 exclusively with Rhone varietals. Red varietals include syrah, grenache, and mourvedre, and white varietals include viognier, marsanne, roussanne, and grenache blanc.
During this year’s harvest season, I found myself at the vineyard early in the morning to capture the hands that gather and prepare what we get to enjoy in the comfort of their beautiful tasting room patio.
